If there’s one company besides Apple in the smartphone industry which has been last in line to adopt new changes, it’s Sony. Like Apple, the Japanese brand doesn’t ape any other smartphone manufacturer and keeps its products different from the rest of the market. The company has been following its OmniBalance design Sony Xperia XZ2 philosophy since the very beginning of its smartphones.
The devices that company has launched look symmetric from all angles, unlike those marketed by other smartphone manufacturers. But now with almost every manufacturer changing the design of its smartphones to make room for narrow bezels, Sony needed to do something. And the company is finally doing it, but once again after everyone else, and once again in a different manner.
We’ve been hearing since last few months that company’s flagship devices launching this year will come with a different design than the one that we’ve seen in all of its flagships till date. Sony India’s MD Mr. Kenichiro Hibi had also confirmed this. Now finally we’ve got a chance to get the first glimpse of that new design, thanks to a leaked image of Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact from Xperia Blog. You can see the image below:
As you can see, it’s a more rounded design than the flat one that was the hallmark of Xperia devices till now. The back of the device is rounded, and so are the sides, meeting seamlessly with the glass on the front. And while the bezels don’t appear to be narrow, the display seems taller this time, which may mean an 18:9 aspect ratio. As people pointed out on Xperia Blog, this design is in-line with company’s previously leaked ‘plate+human’ design philosophy.
The philosophy was around a few concepts Sony was playing with – one of them was to make the back curved, and another was to make it with a soft material to provide best possible grip on the device. If that’s done in company’s upcoming breed of devices, their curved backs may be made of silicon leather textures, making them look and feel more pleasant and premium.

It’s also worth noting that company recently tweeted a teaser video inviting people to its MWC event on 26th of February. The teaser video also showed curved ripples, which may be a hint towards the curved design of devices that will be launched. It was not immediately clear what those curved ripples meant, but now after this leaked image of Xperia XZ2 Compact, we’ve got some idea about it.
So let’s wait until 26, which is just five days away now. We’ll bring you details about everything that’s launched that day by Sony, so keep checking back.
