So what was awaited for a long time has finally happened. Xiaomi just launched its much anticipated Mi Mix 2 smartphone in China, and as expected, it’s a device taking the bezel-less game to next level. Besides that it also has plenty of surprises associated with it, the biggest of which is its price tag. Just like other Xiaomi devices this flagship product has also been priced in a highly aggressive manner, which further increases its appeal to the smartphone buyers.
However, despite this goodness there’re also some areas where Mi Mix 2 falls short of expectations. Here we’ll try to take a look on all those pros and cons of Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, which Xiaomi is planning to roll out globally in next few weeks.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Pros
The Pros of Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 are as follows:
#1. Stunning and More Manageable Design
Xiaomi has now earned quite some reputation for its design choices, and that has been proven once again with this smartphone. Mi Mix 2 is a gorgeous device with its ceramic body, metal frame and of course, the tri bezel-less display.
The display covers almost entire front of device with only a narrow bezel in the bottom, which houses the front facing camera, notification LED and other circuitry required to power that LCD display. When it comes to design, this phone is a marvel.
Mi Mix 2 is also much more manageable than its predecessor. First Mix smartphone was huge with a 6.44-inch display, which meant that it was difficult to use without the help of both hands. That pain point has now been addressed by Xiaomi, as Mix 2 comes with a smaller 6-inch display, which makes it more manageable.
#2. High Resolution Display
Next major plus point of Mix 2 is, as expected, its large display. It’s an LCD display with resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 pixels, and while it may not be as bright and vivid as that of Galaxy S8, it’s still quite pleasing to the eye. The colors come to life in that high resolution display panel, and the way it has been packed put on top of smartphone it feels like you’re holding only a screen in your hand.
#3. Powerful Configuration
Being a flagship smartphone, design and display are not the only advantages of Mix 2. It’s loaded with a Snapdragon 835 processor inside and there’re RAM choices of 4GB, 6GB and even 8GB if you’re willing to shell out the bucks.
The 4GB version will come with 64GB of internal storage, 6GB RAM version with 128GB internal storage and 8GB version will have 256GB internal storage. That’s called a powerful configuration.
#4. Bigger Battery With QuickCharge Support
Xiaomi knew that this powerful hardware will require a juicy battery, so the company went ahead with a 3,400 mAh battery for Mix 2. The device also supports QuickCharge 3.0, so you won’t have to keep it plugged for long time.
#5. Aggressively Affordable
Finally, despite this powerful hardware configuration and stunning design, Mi Mix 2 doesn’t cost much. Yep, that’s true – the 64GB version has been priced at $500, 128GB version at $550 and 256GB version at $600. That’s it – it’s as aggressively priced as other products of Xiaomi.
So that was the good part of Mi Mix 2. Now let’s look at slightly disappointing part.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Cons
The cons of Mi Mix 2 are as follows:
#1. Non-removable battery
The battery of Mi Mix 2 is non-removable, which means it’s a headache to replace the battery when it goes wrong.
#2. Single lens camera
While Xiaomi claims that its 12mp single lens primary shooter with f/2.0 aperture is also quite capable of capturing great photos, the company has actually committed a blunder by not including the dual camera in this flagship smartphone.
On one hand they’re launching mid-range $250 smartphones with dual-lens camera (Mi A1), and on the other hand they didn’t bother to include one of them in their flagship product. Disappointing.
#3. No headphone jack
Besides bezels if there’s another thing which has been eliminated from this device, it’s the headphone jack. And while merits and demerits of this choice can be debated endlessly, it’s a fact that most smartphone users are still not ready to adjust to the alternatives which are being presented for the traditional 3.5 mm jack.
Neither wireless nor USB Type-C based earphones are able to provide the kind of seamless and universal integration that a headphone jack can provide.
#4. Non-expandable memory
While Mi Mix 2 comes with plenty of internal memory (64GB, 128GB and 256GB), if you still want an SD card slot, you’re out of luck. It’d have been better if they’d have included an expandable memory slot in the 64GB version at least.
#5. No support for wireless charging
Finally, Mi Mix 2 also doesn’t support wireless charging too. A flagship phone with lack of this feature seems a little outdated.
The crux of above given pros and cons can be summarized like this:
Stunning Tri bezel-less design
Gorgeous high resolution display
Single lens camera
No expandable memory
Bigger 3,400 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support
No headphone jack
No support for wireless charging
Too much focus on the display alone has made Mi Mix 2 a bit lagging in other departments. Of course, the device looks beautiful and works better than its predecessor in all possible ways, but it still lacks some critical new technologies that can be easily found in other similarly priced devices.
In a nutshell, despite its eye-catching design and flagship configuration it’s a smartphone with substantial room for improvement. Show your love in comments <3
